Having belatedly realized that the essence of a phrase structure tree does not lend itself to mere description, I thought it would be best to post an example tree to augment my previous posts. This is the first sentence of Remembrance: “For a long time I used to go to bed early.” A pretty simple sentence with a relatively simple tree — S=sentence; PP=prepositional phrase; NP=nounphrase; VP=verb phrase; etc. Unfortunately the other sentences I diagrammed were simply too large for the computer to handle, so I had to hand sketch those and scan them in. They are less attractive, but legible. Cheers,
