Research Check-in 2: The 1970s

For my second set of movies, every part of the process went very smoothly. There was no trouble obtaining the films, and my schedule was followed closely. I thought that the 70s movies were generally more enjoyable than the popular 60s films, but that might just be personal bias. What is not up for debate, however, is that the 70s films were significantly more adult than their 60s counterparts, which lines up with my original hypothesis that R-rated movies become more adult as time goes on.

My favorite movie of the 70s was The Godfather, which might come as no surprise, as this movie is often as cited one of the best films of all time. The whole movie draws you into its story of family and deception incredibly well, making the post-World War 2 New York City feel alive and convincing. The acting was stellar all around, with Marlon Brando and Al Pacino headlining the cast. Complete all of this with an iconic soundtrack, and the finished product is almost too good to be true. I loved all of the movies from this decade, but The Godfather had to be my favorite.

My least favorite movie from the 70s was probably Alien, but only because all of the other movies were just that good. Alien was able to retain its original frightfulness despite being forty years old, which is quite impressive. Sigourney Weaver was great in the leading role, but she just couldn’t compete with Pacino, Nicholson, and De Niro from the other films. Some of the special effects were a bit aged as well, which slightly detracted from the otherwise terrifying movie. In the end, Alien is a fantastic movie, but it was my least favorite of the impressive crop of 70s films.

In total, the 70s provided a good amount of adult content in its iconic R-rated movies, which follows my anticipated trend of adult content increasing with time. In the end, the 70s had over one hundred more counts of adult content in its movies than the 60s, which is a marked increase. I think that this increase occurred because audiences at the time were becoming slowly more accustomed to adult content in American culture as a whole during this decade, and I believe that this trend will continue into the 80s and beyond.
