Research Check-in 3: The 1980s

The third set of movies I watched, the 80s, was altogether quite easy to obtain and was very enjoyable to watch. There were two Stanley Kubrick movies in the bunch, which is impressive of him and well deserved, as The Shining and Full Metal Jacket were my two favorite movies of the group. This decade also took another jump in the amount of adult content in each movie.

My favorite movie of the 80s was definitely The Shining, in large part of Jack Nicholson, who has already made an appearance in this research project (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest). Once again, his phenomenal acting carried the movie he was in, and that combined with Kubrick’s directorial mastery made for a film that stuck with me for days after watching it. The whole movie had a chilling vibe, and Nicholson’s slow descent into madness was unlike any other acting job I have ever seen.

My least favorite movie from the 80s was Scarface, and I think that this is in part because of how much hype I heard around the movie before I watched it. I feel that Pacino was a convincing character in total, but I thought that his Cuban accent came in and out as the movie progressed. The soundtrack was painfully 80s, which did not help either. Finally, I felt that the movie was gratuitous at times with its violence and glorification of a morally reprehensible lifestyle.

In total, the 80s took a huge step ahead of the 70s in terms of the amount of adult content in its movies. Profanity specifically took a huge leap forward, which is an interesting development, as it felt like there was almost a taboo around excessive cursing before this group of 80s movies. Scarface specifically stands out among all other movies so far, as it pushed the boundaries of violence, profanity, and drug use that could be shown in movies. The scene where Pacino’s friend gets his head chainsawed open was unlike any scene I had seen during this research project, which might symbolize a step forward in how desensitized American audiences are to violence.
