Research Check-in 4: The 1990s

The fourth set of movies I watched, the 90s, was definitely the best group of movies I have watched so far in this research project. The movies are now taking on more and more of the characteristics that I see in modern movies today, from the non-chronological storyline of Pulp Fiction to the cynical outlook of American Beauty. Once again, the movies took a further step forward in terms of adult content, but this increase was significantly less than any other decade jump so far.

My favorite movie of the 90s was Pulp Fiction, and I think the work that Quentin Tarantino did to craft a unique and disjointed story that still struck home with viewers was genius. The acting jobs of Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Travolta also carried the film, working together to create one of the most unusual yet interesting movies I have ever seen. In total, each aspect of the film worked together perfectly to create a wonderful final product.

My least favorite movie from the 90s was American Beauty, but I say this very reluctantly. I really do think all four movies easily could have been my four favorite from all of the films I have watched so far, but pick one I must, and my least favorite of the group was American Beauty. I think that the other three movies edge it out because as much as I loved Kevin Spacey, the other three leads-Jodie Foster, Samuel L. Jackson/John Travolta, and Tim Robbins- were all slightly better in the jobs they did. All in all though, still a fantastic movie.

The 90s were more adult in the content they presented than the 80s, but just barely. On average, there were about 160 instances of adult content in each 80s movie and about 169 in each 90s movie, a slim margin indeed. It seems so far that the 80s might have set the tone for the rest of the following decades in terms of adult content, but only more time and movies will tell.
