Applied Music Theory in Songwriting and Recording

Songwriting is fundamentally grounded in music theory. Most popular songwriters have not studied tonal theory; nonetheless, they use it in their craft. My goal is to apply knowledge of music theory within the composition of original songs and the recording of these works. In spite of songwriters who write purely by ear, there are rules and structures that some unknowingly follow. Knowledge of these concepts and understanding of their usages are necessary in order to create high-quality compositions. The songwriting I will undertake this summer will include writing within different key signatures, transposition to ideal vocal keys, employment of varied chord structures, and notation of musical parts. In my tonal theory course, I am studying notation, scales, keys, intervals, chord types, inversions, transposition, progressions, and chord analysis. These concepts will be drawn on throughout my project.
