Third Cinema and Politicized Art

Third Cinema is a radical artistic movement within the sphere of film that emerged out of Argentina in the late 1960’s to 1970’s that focused on film as an act of liberation. For my project, I intend to explore the place the Third Cinema movement has within the greater historical context of politicized art movements, specifically in regards to its legacy and impact on subsequent conceptions of the role of art. I will further investigate the ways in which Third Cinema’s ideological framework could be applied today to the new forms of artistic expression available due to democratization and advancement in the technological landscape, as well as identify ways in which current modes of thinking about art are comparable, both in terms of what it accomplishes and its capacity for political influence.
