Examining the social dynamic of multicultural healthcare through the lens of medical interpretation

In a country that is becoming increasingly diverse, it is important to take a look at the role of personal identity in society. Immigration has brought a variety of ethnic groups to the United States, including a large influx of people from Spanish-speaking regions. These people play a critical role in our society. However, when important cultural distinctions are overlooked—when language, history, and identity are forgotten—Hispanics are often homogenized by society, causing them to be viewed as a single, stereotyped group while their individual identities are lost. A social dynamic where people of many races intersect can create hierarchies of power that may work to perpetuate this cycle.
